On 26 November 2025, the annual Status Meeting of the junior research groups funded under the programme “Bioeconomy as Societal Change” took place in Gießen. Since 2014, this funding initiative of the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Spatial Development (BMFTR) has supported interdisciplinary research addressing the social, economic, technological, and ecological dimensions of the transition toward a sustainable bio-based economy. Hosted by the TRABBI research group at Justus Liebig University Giessen, this year’s meeting brought together the four funded junior research groups: BIOPOLISTA, MeatTheBioeconomy, ReValueD, and TRABBI. Each group presented updates on their ongoing work and discussed progress, challenges and emerging empirical insights. As part of the programme, the BIOPOLISTA team shared preliminary findings from their recent fieldwork, offering early reflections on how political dynamics, stakeholder perspectives and regional contexts shape governance and policy processes in the bioeconomy.
Vor knapp zehn Jahren startete das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) die Fördermaßnahme „Bioökonomie als gesellschaftlicher Wandel“ (BagW). Seitdem wurde eine Vielzahl spannender und innovativer Forschungsprojekte in Einzel- sowie Verbundvorhaben im Nexus aus gesellschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und ökologischen Aspekten der Bioökonomie gefördert. Anlässlich des nahenden Jubiläums laden das BMBF und der Projektträger Jülich (PtJ) Sie herzlich zu der eintägigen Konferenz Bioökonomie für eine nachhaltige Zukunft – 10 Jahre „Bioökonomie als gesellschaftlicher Wandel“ ein. Im Rahmen dieser Jubiläumsveranstaltung werden sich Ihnen einige herausragende Leuchtturmprojekte aus zehn Jahren der Forschungsförderung vorstellen und Ihre wichtigsten Forschungsergebnisse präsentieren. Auf Basis dieser Impulse sollen zentrale Fragen zu der Rolle und den Beiträgen heutiger und zukünftiger gesellschaftswissenschaftlicher Forschung in der Bioökonomie aufgeworfen und gemeinsam mit derzeitigen und ehemaligen Forschenden aus der BagW-Förderung, weiteren Wissenschaftlern und Wissenschaftlerinnen sowie Vertretern des BMBF und des PtJ diskutiert werden. Seien Sie dabei, informieren Sie sich über spannende Entwicklungen in der Bioökonomie und tauschen Sie sich mit Expertinnen und Experten dazu aus. Die Konferenz findet am 26. Dennis Eversberg contributed to the conference “Societal prerequisites for a succesful transformation” that took place on 12. Dezember 2023 at the Federal Chancellery of Germany. By presenting findings of the flumen research, he spoke about “attitudes and mentalities – how people glance at societal change”.

Lilian Pungas was invited to present her flumen research at the Bioeconomy Forum 2023 on December 5, 2023 in the thematic block “Beyond renunciation and promise? Futures of the bioeconomy”. In her presentation “Sufficiency-oriented examples of the bioeconomy – lessons learned from the periphery?”, she addressed sufficiency, degrowth and socio-ecological transformation in relation to the bioeconomy, referring to sub-topics and actors of current bioeconomy strategies that have so far remained invisible. With her case study, she also illustrated that a sufficiency-oriented bioeconomy is usually linked to the question of the good life. Finally, she also emphasized that (eco-)feminist debates and criticism have not been sufficiently (if at all) taken into account in the current German bioeconomy.
